Square Point of Sale supported and recommended Hardware for iPad (iOS) & Android. A buying guide to purchasing the right Square Hardware for your business.

Choosing the correct hardware for a new Point of Sale software such as Square POS can be quite confusing, especially if it your first time.

The Cash Register Warehouse team can understand why this may be, so we decided to put some information together which we hope will be beneficial. Choose the Square supported hardware to match the operating system connection type you require. 

Star mPOP All in One Solution

The Star mPOP is a compact All in One POS Solution which is currently only compatible with iPad. The mPOP is available in White or Black. You can add a barcode scanner as well but it must be a Socket Mobile Scanner.

The Star Micronics mPOP™ is a Mobile Point of Purchase solution which is also the first combined cash drawer and printer combination designed for Point of Sale. The mPOP™ is a compact all-in-one solution with Bluetooth and USB connectivity which is great for popup stores, kiosks and areas where space is limited. It also looks stylish and modern so could adapt into any workspace or environment. The Star mPOP™ is only compatible with iOS (iPad).

Square Supported Receipt Printers

It is important to choose the the correct supported receipt printer with Square and this is also dependant on the platform being used BUT it is not only the platform or operating system, it also depends on how you intend to connect it. 

Star TSP143III Thermal Receipt Printer (LAN / Ethernet) - iPad (iOS) & Android

The Star Micronics TSP143III LAN connects to the Wifi router via Ethernet cable just like a standard printer on the network. This is why all operating system are able to connect to the printer whether they are connected by cable or Wireless This is why the iOS and iPad can connect to. The devices may be communicating by cordless to the router but the printer must be connected to the wireless router/modem via a cable as this is the only interface it comes with. This is also great because more than one device can connect to the printer at any one given time. In saying that, remember that the cash drawer connects the printer so this must be taken into account if multiple devices are using it.

Star TSP143III Thermal Receipt Printer (USB) - Android Only 

The Star Micronics TSP143IIIU USB (Also known as the TSP100) connects via USB cable to your Android device and USB receipt printer, you will require a Micro USB OTG (On-The-Go) adaptor.

As you will see, we also have this displaying as being able to connect to iPad... we didn't make a mistake, it IS possible. So long as you are using the later style iPad with the latest OS and lightning charger, you are able to connect the iPad using the lightning cable directing into the receipt printer. This is great for single terminal solutions where only one iPad is required as it is a direct connection. A great thing about this solution is that when you connect the iPad to the printer, it simultaneously charges the iPad at the same time!

Star TSP143III Thermal Receipt Printer (Bluetooth) - iPad (iOS) Only

The Star TSP143III-Bi Bluetooth Printer can be paired to an iPad ir iOS device which provides fast and reliable setup but remember when doing this, there is a limitation by using the Bluetooth interface. You can only connect one device to the Bluetooth Printer.

For example: Only one iPad can connect to the Star TSP143III-BI Bluetooth Printer at any given time. If you have multiple iPad, you cannot connect them all to a single printer. You CAN still connect other devices such as Bluetooth Barcode Scanners though.

Epson TM-T82II Ethernet / LAN / USB Receipt Printer - iOS (iPad) & Square Stand

The most economical Square supported receipt printer is the Epson TM-T82II Ethernet/LAN/USB POS Printer. The TM-T82II Ethernet/LAN printer connect via cable to the wireless router via cable which allows you to connect iPad & Square Stand. The printer just needs to be connected within the same network. The great things about the version we sell is that is comes with a dual interface meaning it has Ethernet/LAN PLUS USB (USB Cable is NOT included). This means you can also use it with the Square stand if you device to in the future.

Star TSP143IIILAN (Wireless) Thermal Receipt Printer - iPad (iOS) & Android

You can use the Star Micronics TSP143IIIW (TSP143IIIWLAN) from either iOS or Android devices. You setup the Wireless Receipt Printer to connect to your wifi router and the device can be found on the network. This gives you the freedom of being able to connect multiple devices on the network.

Star TSP654IIE (Ethernet/LAN) Thermal Receipt Printer - iPad (iOS) & Android

The Star Micronics TSP654IIE LAN connects to the Wifi router via Ethernet cable just like a standard printer on the network. Star Micronics SP742 Dot Matrix Kitchen Printer with Ethernet Interface - iPad (iOS) & Android

The Star Micronics SP742ME is a Dot Matrix Printer most commonly used in the Kitchen or hot areas. It can also use 1 Ply, 2 Ply or 3 Ply paper rolls and takes an ink ribbon. This printer connects via LAN to the Wifi router via Ethernet cable just like a standard printer on the network. This is why both operating systems are able to connect to the printer whether they are connected via Wifi. This is why the iOS (iPad) & Android devices can connect to it. The devices may be communicating by cordless to the router but the printer must be connected to the wireless router/modem via a cable as this is the only interface it comes with. Epson TM-T88VI Bluetooth Receipt Printer - iPad (iOS) & Square Stand

The Epson TM-T88VI Bluetooth Receipt Printer can connect with Square on an iPad, iPhone or Square Stand. This is a high quality thermal POS Printer and has a 4 year warranty. It has the bluetooth interface which will allow you to pair your device to the iPad or Phone. Your cash drawer connects directly into the receipt printer and will open automatically when a sale has been finalised.

Square Supported Barcode Scanners

Barcode Scanners for Square POS depend on which device you are using. If you are using an iPad, only the Socket Mobile Bluetooth Barcode Scanners are compatible. If using an Android device or the Square Point of Sale Stand, a USB barcode scanner is compatible.

The Socket S700 Bluetooth Barcode scanner is the current latest model used with Square POS. The older version was the 7Ci but now replaced. The Socket S700 Pairs directly do you device and works straight away with Square. They are available in a range of colours including including White, Blue, Red, Green & Yellow.

Honeywell 1250G Laser USB Barcode Scanner - Android & Square Stand Only

The Honeywell 1250G is a high quality USB Barcode Scanner with a laser scan engine. It connects via USB to the Square Stand and also compatible with Android devices. The 1250G has a 5 year warranty and also comes equipped with a stand for hands free reading.

Zebra LS-2208 Laser USB Barcode Scanner - Android & Square Stand only

The Zebra LS-2208 (Also known as Symbol & Motorola) is a high quality USB Barcode Scanner with a laser scan engine. It connects via USB to the Square Stand and also compatible with Android devices. The 1250G has a 5 year warranty and also comes equipped with a stand for hands free reading.

Square Supported Cash Drawers

There are a couple of Cash Drawers that are supported and recommended by Square, however, you can use any of our POS Drawers as they are 24v and have an RJ12 connection (telephone style) which connects to the DK or Drawer Kick port of the receipt printer. Square requires a receipt printer in order for the cash drawer to open Automatically. You can turn the receipt printing off so you aren't wasting paper but Square sends a command to the drawer to apply a voltage to the drawer kick port resulting in the drawer to open.

VPOS EC-410 24 Volt Cash Drawer - Full Sized

The VPOS EC410 Cash Drawer Consist of 5 Notes and 8 Coin section and comes with a 3 year warranty. It is heavy duty and connects directly to the receipt printer using the RJ12 cable connection. The dimensions of this drawer are 410mm (w) x 415mm (d) x 110mm (h).

VPOS EC-350 24 Volt Cash Drawer - Compact

The VPOS EC350 Cash Drawer is a compact cash drawer and consists of 4 Notes and 8 Coin section and comes with a 3 year warranty. It is heavy duty and connects directly to the receipt printer using the RJ12 cable connection. The dimensions of this drawer are 350mm (w) x 405mm (d) x 90mm (h).

Star Micronics SCD-100 24 Cash Drawer - Compact

The Star SCD100 is a Small, Compact Cash Drawer which has a small footprint. It has 4 adjustable note holders with 5 or 8 removable coin holders for added flexibilityYou can connect the SCD-100 into any printer via the DK Port. The dimensions of this drawer are 330mm (w) x 360mm (d) x 82mm (h).

Square Label Printers

Although Square does not have any officially release documentation about a compatible label printer, we have had our clients using the Dymo LabelWriter 450 with success.
